"Walk[ing] The River" with the gUiLLeMoTs

Guillemots
After the craziness of last week trying to reign in Cerebral Ballzy, here at Est.1987 HQ we were in deep need of something to calm us down.

Luckily, our prayers were answered as we were invited down to an intimate Guillemots show.

The dynamic four-piece have been out of the spotlight for a little while, and since 2008 have been concentrating on solo projects and having a break from touring. Fast forward to 2011 and Guillemots are back; new album and developed sound in tow. With the new album “Walk The River” being released back in April, the band took heavily to the festival season and it's been non stop since then. Now sees the band packing out intimate venues up and down the country.

MC Lord Magrão & Fyfe Dangerfield
Their impressive seventeen song set is a journey through their trio of albums; the early “Trains To Brazil” fitting perfectly alongside the lead track from the new album “The Basket”. Lead singer Fyfe Dangerfield is the perfect host, regaling the crowd with stories of adventures past. Guillemots are the ‘everyman’ band; the band that even if you think you don’t really know, you recognise their distinctive sound. Almost timeless in their approach and longevity, it is surprising to find out that they are actually a young band, only releasing their Mercury Music nominated debut in 2006.

MC Lord Magrão
The evening is an extraordinary blend of upbeat melodies seen in “Annie Let’s Not Wait” and more melancholy, sombre notes in “Yesterday Is Dead”. Guillemots fill the stage with an eclectic mix of instruments, from Aristazabal Hawkes’ double bass to Greig Stewart’s drums and percussion. However, none more so than MC Lord Magrão whose use of the Theremin brings an eerie and haunting quality to the set. The majority of the audience here tonight are long serving fans of the band hanging on Dangerfield’s every word; however, those newer fans are not alienated. Guillemots are clearly a band that push hard to deliver an enviable performance night after night; Dangerfield even falling off his stool at one point. They are a band that will be a pillar in British music for years to come.
